Art Call:  Secrets

A regional juried exhibition hosted by MH Art Gallery asks artists to create a 2-dimensional artwork portraying a Secret of the artist's choosing--personal, political, mysterious, or unearthed.  Note:  Maximum size is 30" framed.

June 16 - August 10 | The deadline for entry is August 10, 2025 at 8pm.  

Eligible Work

Original 2-D work (paintings, drawings, pastel, collage, mixed media, monotypes, etchings, etc.) created within the last three years solely by the artist. Artwork must be no longer than  30" on either side including frame. All work must be framed, or gallery wrapped (finished sides), wired and ready to hang. No sawtooth hangers will be accepted. All accepted work must be delivered in person; no shipments accepted.

​​The following is not permitted in the show: 

Photography, digital art, or commercial prints.
Derivative art where the source (another artist's work or photograph) is recognizable.
Work created during a class, workshop, or online tutorial.

Application Process

A $20 entry fee entitles artists to enter up to 2 pieces of work.  Photos of artwork must be submitted with the application. Before uploading images be sure they are smaller than 4 MB, and at least 1920 pixels on both dimensions at 72 dpi. Images must be in JPEG format and may be resized at https://imageresizer.com. If resizing, use 1920 on the shortest dimension.  Photos should be cropped to the edges of the art and must not include a frame or background.Applicants will be asked to include a statement with each artwork submission explaining the secret depicted.Applicants automatically consent to their artwork being used in promotional materials. Accepted artists will be notified by August 14, 2025, via email. Check your spam folders for emails from info@mariettaartalive.com.  Artists are responsible for any loss or damage to their work during this show. Artists are responsible for the drop-off and pick up of work.

Awards - $650

Two $150 Juror's Choice Awards and two $100 Honorable Mention Awards will be presented on September 12 at 6pm. One $150 People's Choice Award will be announced on Sunday, October 26, at 1pm by MH Art Gallery staff. The public may vote on their favorite artwork up until noon on that date.

Juror of Acceptance and Awards:  Jackie Madsen

Jackie Madsen graduated from Kutztown University with a BS in art education, and continued graduate work at Millersville University, The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia, Maryland College of Art, and Penn State University. Jackie currently is retired from a 25 year teaching career from Donegal High School, teaching advanced level drawing and painting classes. Teaching is her love and inspiration and many of her students have gone on to successful careers in the fine and applied arts. Jackie is represented currently at Red Raven Art Company in Lancaster. Her work has been featured and awarded accolades, in numerous galleries and museums in and around Pennsylvania. "I find it hard to characterize my work. I am influenced by the study of art and I look to my artistic heroes for inspiration, but I don’t think I fit into a stylistic period or can say there is one particular artist I emulate. I am a buffet, changing, evolving every day. The actual process of charcoal to paper or brush to canvas is my inspiration. Each piece evolving from the moment. Tentative traces and bold marks reflect the progression."

Gallery Sales & Commission

Artwork must be for sale; 30% of all sales will benefit Rivertownes PA USA (Marietta Art Alive) 501c3. Sales tax will be collected and paid by Rivertownes PA USA..

Drop Off/Pick Up Dates

Accepted work must be dropped off on August 23 and 24 from 11am – 3pm, at the MH Art Gallery, 42 W. Market Street, Marietta, PA.

Unsold work must be picked up on October 26 from 3pm - 5pm at same location.​
