2026 Call for entry
The Alberta Potters' Association invites you to apply for our 2026 juried exhibition, The Stein Show. Please apply with any ceramic stein, hand built or thrown, to our exhibition. To be considered, work must be minimum 75% ceramic. All steins entered into the show must be for sale.1 stein per submission. Submission fee is non-refundable and per entry. This is a juried show, and works submitted are not guaranteed to be accepted. Judges are asked to review the steins on the following criteria:Originality: Is there something fresh and new about the content? Is the work individual and/or personal in its approach?Creative Expression: Is the piece memorable? Move you in an emotional or intellectual way? Challenge your thinking? Leave a lasting impression?Technical Skill: Does the piece reflect high quality technical skill?Surface Design: Interesting/Creative techniques used? Is the composition well considered? Photo Quality: Is the background of the image a white minimal background? Is the image of the Stein clear? Do you have multiple images of different angles of your Stein? Wheel Thrown Category: Majority of the vessel must be created on the wheel to be considered for this category. Alberta Potters Association reserve the right to not accept the piece once it has been viewed in person.Hand Built Category: The vessel must be constructed using primarily hand built methods. Alberta Potters Association reserve the right to not accept the piece once it has been viewed in person.Student Category: Steins can be wheel thrown or handbuilt but are made by a student. We consider a student someone who is attending a creditable post-secondary school (ex. Alberta University of the Arts, Red Deer Polytechnic, etc.) and/or currently taking classes at a studio for 5 years or less. *Pick the category your stein falls closely in. Elements of both wheel thrown or hand built components may be present in a single stein, user must pick the appropriate category they feel fits their work.This event will coincide with Oktoberfest of 2026. All steins entered into the show must be for sale. The consignment split for sold items is 30% to the APA and 70% to the artist. Everyone is welcome to attend the event at Village Brewery in Calgary, Alberta on September 25th from 5-9pm. Application closes July 10th, 2026 11:59pm. Artists will be notified of their acceptance or rejection to the show by August 10th, 2026. Physical items must be mailed or delivered by September 18th, 2026. Items must arrive packed appropriately in a box ready for transport. Drop off location will be provided if you are accepted into the show.The four judged categories are: (1) Best Wheel Thrown Stein (2) Best Hand Built Stein (3) Best Student Stein and (4) People's Choice. People's choice is awarded based on the number of public votes. Virtual voting will start on September 11th, 2026. Votes can also be cast at the event on September 25th at Village Brewery. The winner will be announced at 8:30pm on September 25th at the event. Unsold work from the in-person event will be returned to the artist. Artists must arrange pick up or shipment with the Alberta Potters Association. Steins with flaws (ex. glaze flaws and cracks) will not be accepted but may be reviewed on a case by case basis.
